    		<title>Long Bay High School Announces the Winners of the TCI Island Life Conch Christmas Art and Spoken Word Competition 2019</title>
    		<link>https://longbayhigh.edupage.org/news/?newid=50#news-50</link>
    		<description>

The Principal of Long Bay High School wishes to thank all the schools, students, teachers, parents and judges who participated in the TCI Island Life Conch Christmas Art and Spoken Word 2019 competition. I could not have done it without you. I launched this competition in 2018 to give students an opportunity to learn about and showcase the culture of the Turks and Caicos Islands. Additionally, I believed that students would gain a deeper appreciation for the visual and performing arts as a serious career choice. In 2018, three schools participated, students submitted poems, songs and works of art of high quality. Thank you to the teachers and parents who helped them to enter. In 2019, participation increased and we received an overwhelming response from students across Providenciales. As the principal of Long Bay High School, I will continue to promote the culture of the Turks and Caicos Islands. I apologise for the delay in announcing the results, this was beyond my control. I am pleased to announce the winners and will be distributing the prizes to our winners. All winning schools are asked to contact us via email to make arrangements for the collection of their prizes. Winners are also asked to wear their school uniforms to receive their prizes. Congratulations to all these talented winners!! Thank you to all the persons associated with this signature competition and for partnering with Long Bay High School. Please remain safe during these challenging times.

    		<title>2020 Hurricane Season Forecast to be an Active Atlantic Hurricane Season</title>
    		<link>https://longbayhigh.edupage.org/news/?newid=47#news-47</link>
    		<description>

2020 Hurricane Season Forecast to be an Active Hurricane Season

As the world battles the Coronavirus crisis, researchers at the Colorado State University (CSU) are warning of a potentially active Atlantic Hurricane Season; beginning on June 1st to November 30th 2020.

Predicted to be an above-normal season, this year's Hurricane Season marks the fifth consecutive year of above-average activity in the Atlantic. Researchers are predicting sixteen (16) named storms. Of those, eight (8) are expected to become hurricanes and four (4) to reach major hurricane strength (Saffir/Simpson Category 3,4,5). This is due to the absence of El Nino and warm sea surface temperatures. El Niño tends to increase upper-level westerly winds across the Caribbean into the tropical Atlantic, tearing apart hurricanes as they try to form.

The students and staff members of Long Bay High School joined their Caribbean brothers and sisters in prayers on the first day of school. Long Bay High School hosted a special devotional exercise for the victims and survivors of Hurricane Dorian. The horrific category five storm ripped through the Caribbean over the course of a two-week period, leaving the northwestern Bahamas in complete disarray. Grand Bahama Island and the Abacos were left destroyed after seeing winds of 185 mph and above, a deadly storm surge and tornadic activity.
